Why am I posting a picture of lashes on a piece of paper? Well, the reason is simple. It's part of the lashing process that I have been shocked to learn that many lash techs are not taught. There are many lash courses out there. Some great ones and some not so great. Your experience and expertise matters, so choosing your course is important.
It's my personal opinion to take a course that teaches you the basics with classics and touches on volume. Once you know the basics you can do anything with lashing. On going education is always a good idea if you want to expand your knowledge. However, some of the best lash artist I know are self taught. Did you know in the state of CA you actually do not need to have a lash certificate to lash? Legally you are supposed to be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist to lash and hold insurance. With that said, I do think that even if you hold one of these licenses or both you should take a course on how to lash. There is so much more involved than just slapping a lash on and calling it good.
Now, back to my picture. These are lashes I removed prior to a fill. I did my complimentary lash bath and the went through the lashes and removed these outgrown lashes AFTER applying eye pads and tape. I used the banana peel method and/ or break the bond. This was part of the lashing process that was so intimidating to me in the beginning. I didn't know how long to take removing out growns, which ones qualified as out growns and I felt like I was hurting my client (even though I was not). So to break it down, I spend about 5 minutes doing this, that way these guys are out of my way while I lash. If I happen to have missed one, I'll remove it if necessary during the fill.
Whhhhyyyy do we have to do this? It's a very important part of a fill.
1. Grown out lashes can twist causing discomfort to your client, and then they start picking, we don't want that!
2. Grown out lashes put a strain on the natural lash (NL). As the lash grows, the extension weight moves out with the NL to a weaker point. The closer to the base, the stronger the lash is.
3. Grown out lashes take away from your lash map perfection. We all love the look of a beautiful curated lash style. If you leave an out grown lash on there, you'll disrupt that pretty lash map.
4. Out grown lashes make it harder to get a dark lash line. Again, the final look is altered because of the out grown lashes.
I hope these tips help! Once you get it down, this part of the service is easy! It's a small part, but so important not only for the final look of your set but the HEALTH of your clients lashes, which should be one of your biggest priorities.
